School: Homework

One of the things I disliked about school when I was young was homework. Now I see that same dislike in my children. I found it hard to help them with that chore although I do try to encourage them to do it. The older they get the harder it is for the parent to actually help them so instilling good habits when they are young is essential.

Jonathan, the bright, highly intelligent, under achiever frustrated me to no end when he was in the nineth and tenth grades. He would usually do the homework was too lazy to turn it in. Can you believe it, he would get an A on the tests and a C on the report card.

Andrew, the one who struggles to understand why he even needs to go to school actually turns the homework in; when he does it. Getting Andrew to want to do the homework is a big struggle. With his learning disadvantages I have a hard time with some of the homework he is actually assigned. But Karen and I as parents still try to instill a good want to do it in him.

How about you? How do your kids do with homework? Leave me a comment about them.

Nexgrill Industries Inc. to Pay $300,000 Civil Penalty

Cite: www.cpsc.gov

WASHINGTON , D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing today that Nexgrill Industries Inc., of City of Industry, Calif., has agreed to pay a $300,000 civil penalty to settle allegations that the company failed to report a hazard with its gas grills. The penalty has been provisionally accepted by the Commission.

CPSC alleged that the firm failed to report a defect with Nexgrill Gas Grill Model 720-0025 in a timely manner. Federal law requires manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to immediately report product defects to the Commission.

Between April 2004 and October 2005, Nexgrill received 20 reports of gas grill fires, including three reports of minor burn injuries. The Commission alleged that Nexgrill failed to report the defect to the Commission for at least 10 months, even after it had sufficient information that the gas grills contained a defect which could create a substantial product hazard or created an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death. Nexgrill voluntarily recalled about 16,000 of the grills in June 2006.

The defect involves the grill’s fuel hose that connects the propane tank to the burner manifold. The fuel hose can be exposed to temperatures that can damage it or cause the hose to separate from the burner manifold. If this occurs, a gas leak and/or fire hazard can result in injury and property damage.

For more information about the recall, consumers should contact Nexgrill Industries Inc. at (888) 361-0888 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the company’s Web site at http://nexgrill0025.serorder.com to receive a free, self-installation retrofit heat shield assembly.
In agreeing to settle this matter, Nexgrill denies it violated federal reporting requirements.

Hoover Company Fined $750,000

Cite: www.cpsc.gov

WASHINGTON , D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Hoover Company Inc., of North Canton, Ohio, has agreed to pay a $750,000 civil penalty. The penalty, which the Commission has provisionally accepted, settles allegations that the company failed to report to CPSC the sale of vacuum cleaners with defective on-off switches that can overheat and cause the vacuum cleaner to catch fire.

In April 2005, Hoover conducted a recall of 636,000 Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners because of defective on-off switches.

In June 2004, after CPSC received notice of several vacuum cleaner incidents, the Commission staff requested Hoover provide a full report of incident information. In July 2004, when Hoover submitted a full report, it had notice of 260 consumer incidents, of which 141 involved reports of fire. Additionally, there was one report of a minor burn injury.

Hoover first learned of a vacuum cleaner switch on one of these units overheating and melting in April 1999.

Federal law requires firms to report to CPSC immediately (within 24 hours) after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that a product contains a defect which could create a substantial risk of injury to the public, presents an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or violates a federal safety standard.

These Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners are plastic, upright vacuums with the brand name “Hoover” and words “Self Propelled” printed on the front of the product. Only those Hoover Self-Propelled Upright Vacuum Cleaners manufactured between May 1998 and November 1999 are included in the recall that is the subject of this penalty.

For additional information, contact Hoover toll-free at (800) 250-6075 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.hoover.com.
