Troy-Bilt, Craftsman Chain Saws

Hazard: The chain saw’s plastic front handle can break during operation. If this occurs, the saw would be difficult to control and poses a risk for lacerations.

Incidents/Injuries: MTD has received two reports of consumers losing control of the saw when the handles broke during use. One consumer reported bruising to his elbow and the other received burns to his fingers after contacting the muffler when the chain saw he was using broke and he lost control of the saw.

Description: These Troy-Bilt and Craftsman brand chain saws are powered by a two-cycle gasoline engine ranging in size from 46cc to 55cc. They are equipped with either an 18-inch or 20-inch bar. There are four Troy-Bilt models affected: 41AY00AR966, 41AY60AR766, 41AY90AR766 and 41AY08AR966. There is one Craftsman “Incredi-Pull” model affected: a 55cc two-cycle gasoline engine with an 18-inch bar and model number 316.350840. The model number of the chain saw is located on the engine casing.

Sold at: The Troy-Bilt brand chain saws were sold at independent retailers, home improvement and hardware stores nationwide from January 2004 through June 2006 for between $200 and $250. The Craftsman brand chain saws were sold at Sears and Kmart stores nationwide from January 2004 through June 2006 for between $190 and $230.

Gourd Candles

Hazard: The gourd candles can have excessive flame height and could fail to self-extinguish when burning down to the bottom of the candle, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves five styles of individual gourd-shaped candles and a set of eight mini-gourd candles. The style number for the candles can be found on the price ticket, receipt or shipping invoice.

Mattel’s Polly Pocket Magnetic Play Sets

Hazard: Tiny magnets inside the dolls and accessories can fall out undetected by parents and caregivers. The magnets can be swallowed, aspirated by young children or placed by a child in their nose or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Aspiration to the lungs requires immediate surgery. Magnets placed in the nose or ears can cause swelling and be difficult to remove.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of 170 reports of the small magnets coming out of these recalled toys. There were three reports of serious injuries to children who swallowed more than one magnet. All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery. A 2-year-old child was hospitalized for seven days and a 7-year-old child was hospitalized for 12 days. An 8-year-old child was also hospitalized.

Description: The recalled Polly Pocket play sets contain plastic dolls and accessories that have small magnets. The magnets measure 1/8 inch in diameter and are imbedded in the hands and feet of some dolls, and in the plastic clothing, hair pieces and other accessories to help the pieces attach to the doll or to the doll’s house. The model number is printed on the bottom of the largest pieces on some of the play sets. Contact Mattel if you cannot find a model number on your product to determine if it is part of the recall. Polly Pocket magnetic play sets currently on store shelves are not included in this recall.

Desk Lamps

Hazard: The fiberglass sheath intended to protect the electrical cord can become improperly aligned during consumer assembly of the lamp. This poses a shock hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Environmental Lighting Concepts Inc. has received four reports of minor electrical shocks. No property damage has been reported.

Description: This recall involves “Taylor” model burnished nickel metal desk lamp. The adjustable lamp is 16- to 24.75-inches high with adjustment points at the base, mid-shaft and shade. An “O” logo is engraved on the tube cup under the rotary power switch and the name “OTT-LITE” is engraved on the front of the base. Model number 13Z63BN9 or 13T63BN9 is printed on a black label on the underside of the base.

Sold at: Office Depot stores nationwide from May 2006 to October 2006 for about $80.

Counterfeit Circuit Breakers

Hazard: The recalled circuit breakers labeled “Square D” are counterfeit and might not trip when they are overloaded, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Scott Electric Co. is not aware of any incidents or injuries associated with these counterfeit circuit breakers.

Description: The counterfeit circuit breakers include Square D QO-series models 115, 120, 130, 160, 215, 230, 260, 1515, and 1520. Actual Square D circuit breakers have (a) the amp rating written on the handle in white paint on the front of the breaker; (b) on the side of the breaker, where wire terminal screw is located, the arc shoot opening should have squared corners with the bottom edge of the opening angled up; (c) the mounting clip should be yellow chromate with half of the top of the clip visible; and (d) the Square D insignia should be molded onto the breaker. If your Square D breaker does not match this description, it could be counterfeit.

Sold through: Scott Electric Co. distributor locations throughout Pennsylvania and Texas from May 2005 through May 2006 for between $4 and $25.

Target Recalls Various Toys

Hazard: Some of these toys contain lead paint, which is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. Also, some of the toys have sharp points, posing laceration or puncture wound hazards.

Incidents/Injuries: Target has received four reports of toys breaking apart, exposing sharp points. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall involves “Kool Toyz” brand toys, including sets containing die-cast cars, playground set, doll house set, dinosaurs, trucks, boats and planes. The packaging is primary blue and has the “Kool Toyz” logo is on the upper left corner of the packaging. The following chart lists the toys involved in the recall, their item numbers written on the upper right corner of the packaging, and the specific hazards they pose:

“Play Wonder” Puzzle Tables

Hazard: The handles on the puzzle pieces can come off, posing a choking hazard to young children. Also, the tips of the nails on the inside shelf of the puzzle table could be exposed, posing a laceration or puncture hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Target has received two reports of the pegs coming off of the puzzle pieces. In one of these reports, a child was found to be mouthing the pegs. No other injuries were reported relating to these hazards.

Description: This recall involves a “Play Wonder” brand puzzle table that contains three nine-piece wooden puzzles inside the table. They are light blue with paw prints painted across the top of the table. The table is about 13-inches high when assembled and has green sides. The “Play Wonder” logo is located in the front lower right corner of the packaging. Item number 204/12/0162 is located in the front upper right corner of the packaging.

Sold at: Target stores nationwide and on www.target.com from December 2005 through October 2006 for about $25.

Decorative Snaps and Metal Clips

Hazard: The recalled clips and snaps contain high levels of lead. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: The recall involves the “Rob and Bob Studio Clip-Ease” metal clips with model numbers 28-1084, 28-1085 and 28-1086 and the “Rob and Bob Studio Snap-Ease” snaps with model number 28-1080. The product name and model number can be found on the packaging.
